u-blox F11 platform: Ultra-Low Power Meets Intelligent Precision

A new approach to GNSS performance
The u-blox F11 platform represents a significant step forward in GNSS technology, redefining how developers approach the balance between positioning accuracy and power consumption. As part of the latest Gen 11 GNSS series, it is designed to remove the long-standing compromises that have shaped standard precision positioning for years.
Why compromise has held GNSS back
Traditionally, device manufacturers have had to make difficult trade-offs. Achieving higher accuracy often meant increasing power consumption, while optimising for battery life required sacrificing performance. This has been especially challenging for applications such as asset tracking, wearables, and telematics, where both accuracy and long battery life are essential.
Introducing selective dual-band intelligence
The F11 platform introduces a new approach through its situationally aware architecture. Instead of continuously running in full dual-band mode, it intelligently adapts to real-time environmental conditions. In open sky scenarios where signals are strong, it relies on L1 to conserve energy. When conditions become more complex, such as in urban environments, dense foliage, or during indoor to outdoor transitions, it activates the L5 band to maintain positioning accuracy.
This capability, known as selective dual-band or Selective L5 technology, is what sets the platform apart. It allows the system to deliver the benefits of dual-band GNSS without the constant power draw typically associated with it. As a result, the F11 achieves metre-level positioning while operating at power levels much closer to single-band solutions.
Real-world performance and efficiency gains
This intelligent signal management delivers measurable advantages. Devices can achieve up to 70 percent average power reduction compared to continuous dual-band operation. Battery life for asset tracking solutions can extend from months to multiple years. At the same time, positioning performance improves in challenging environments, where traditional systems often struggle with signal reflections and interference.
Flexibility for modern IoT design
Another key benefit is flexibility. The platform supports both single-band and dual-band operation within the same design, allowing developers to optimise performance based on their specific application requirements. Combined with advanced positioning engine software, including SPG 7.0x, the F11 provides a scalable foundation for a wide range of IoT and industrial use cases.
Applications across industries
These capabilities open up new possibilities across multiple sectors. Asset tracking devices can run longer without maintenance. Wearables can deliver more accurate location data without compromising battery life. Telematics systems can maintain reliable positioning in complex real-world environments. Industrial IoT applications can benefit from both efficiency and precision at scale.
A shift in what is possible
The launch of the F11 platform signals a shift in what is possible with standard precision GNSS. It is no longer necessary to choose between accuracy and efficiency. Instead, developers can achieve both through intelligent design and adaptive technology.
