The Internet of Things (IoT) is entering a powerful new phase in 2025. With over 75 billion connected devices and rapid advances in global connectivity, businesses across the UK and Ireland face a transformative opportunity. At Alpha Micro, we are leading the way by helping customers navigate and harness this dynamic landscape.

5G: Enabling Real-Time, High-Density IoT

First, 5G is revolutionising IoT in demanding fields like smart manufacturing, logistics and healthcare. Thanks to ultra-low latency and the ability to connect up to a million devices per square kilometre, 5G supports critical technologies such as predictive maintenance, autonomous transport and connected health monitoring. Moreover, through partnerships with u-blox and RAKwireless, Alpha Micro helps organisations deploy flexible private 5G networks that deliver real-time performance and future scalability.

LPWAN and LoRaWAN: Long-Range and Low Power

Meanwhile, LPWAN technologies like LoRaWAN and NB-IoT remain essential for applications needing long-range connectivity with minimal power use. These include smart agriculture, utilities and industrial monitoring. By working with trusted providers, we support scalable, energy-efficient IoT rollouts suited for remote and low-maintenance environments.

Satellite IoT: Connecting the Hard-to-Reach

For rural, maritime, and remote locations, satellite IoT bridges connectivity gaps. Specifically, providers like Sateliot and Eseye enable global NB-IoT coverage via low-Earth orbit satellites. As a result, businesses can monitor assets anywhere, anytime.

Edge Computing: Faster Decisions, Smarter Data

In addition, edge computing processes data close to the source, reducing latency and bandwidth costs while enhancing privacy. Combined with 5G and LPWAN, it powers applications such as autonomous vehicles, smart retail, and predictive maintenance—delivering real-time insights exactly where they matter.

Looking Forward: Secure and Scalable IoT

Finally, emerging technologies like Wi-Fi 7, BLE, eSIM and blockchain are making IoT more secure and flexible. These advances enable everything from real-time healthcare diagnostics to smart city traffic management.

At Alpha Micro, we’re proud to support UK and Ireland businesses with leading-edge components, connectivity modules and expert design support to bring your IoT vision to life.

Maximise Positioning Accuracy and Battery Life in Next-Generation Wearables

As wearable devices become essential for health, fitness and navigation, the demand for precise positioning grows. However, achieving reliable GNSS accuracy in compact, battery-limited devices remains a challenge.

To solve this, u-blox introduces LEAP (Low Energy Accurate Positioning) — a breakthrough GNSS technology built on the u-blox M10 platform. LEAP delivers consistently accurate positioning while significantly extending battery life. This makes it perfect for smartwatches, fitness trackers and sports wearables.

Solving the Power-Performance Dilemma

Traditionally, low-power GNSS modes sacrifice accuracy. In tough environments like urban canyons, forests, or mountains, weak satellite signals and noise can degrade performance. Devices then drain batteries trying harder to maintain fixes.

LEAP changes this by using smarter signal processing. Instead of handling every signal, it selectively chooses the highest-quality ones. By filtering out noisy signals, it reduces power use and improves accuracy.

Furthermore, LEAP includes real-time external low-noise amplifier (LNA) switching. It evaluates signal strength on the fly and powers the LNA only when needed. This avoids wasting energy.

Optimised for Movement and Real-World Use

LEAP is designed specifically for wearables. It features activity-aware dynamics — motion models customised for running, cycling and hiking. These models help the GNSS system understand user movement better. It compensates for arm swings and stride changes, resulting in more accurate paths.

In real tests, LEAP saved up to 50% power compared to standard GNSS modes. At the same time, it delivered equal or better accuracy. For example, in forests, LEAP achieved a CEP95 of 8 meters — much better than the 14 meters from other solutions. In open skies, accuracy improved from 4 meters to just 2.

Built for the Future of Wearables

LEAP’s compact chip (2.39 x 2.39 mm) fits into the smallest devices. It supports firmware upgrades through external flash or a connected MCU, keeping devices up to date.

Additionally, LEAP works with Android, u-blox AssistNow for faster time-to-first-fix, and positioning protocols like SUPL. This ensures smooth integration into connected ecosystems.

A Leap Forward in GNSS Technology

By combining low power consumption with strong accuracy, LEAP enables smarter, more efficient wearables. Whether building a rugged GPS sports watch or a sleek fitness tracker, LEAP gives your design a competitive edge.
