Transforming North Macedonia’s Farms with IoT

In North Macedonia, agriculture plays a major role in the economy, making up around 10% of the country’s GDP. However, many farms continue to rely on outdated practices. This has limited productivity, despite the country’s fertile land. To address these challenges, IoT developer Intelory has launched a bold initiative to modernise farming using smart technology from RAKwireless.

Using IoT to Solve Real Farming Problems

Intelory developed the Agrow system, a smart agriculture solution powered by LoRaWAN® and solar energy. It provides real-time environmental and crop data, helping farmers make informed decisions. At the heart of this system is the WisGate Edge Pro gateway and the Sensor Hub with Solar Battery Lite, both from RAKwireless. These tools enable off-grid operation in even the most remote fields.

To monitor crops and environmental conditions, the Agrow system includes RAK’s Weather Station and Soil Monitoring solutions. These tools measure soil moisture, temperature, conductivity, and local weather. As a result, farmers can adapt irrigation and fertilisation strategies quickly, reducing waste while increasing yields.

Sustainability and Efficiency in the Field

A key benefit of Intelory’s system is its use of solar energy. This removes the need for conventional power sources and aligns with the push for more sustainable agriculture. Additionally, Intelory uses RAK’s Field Tester after setup to verify LoRaWAN coverage and ensure optimal sensor placement. These steps help maximize efficiency from day one.

Proven Results and a Path Forward

Farmers in the Municipality of Prilep, where the first Agrow deployment took place, have already seen results. Crop yields are up, and water and fertiliser use is down. With accurate, real-time data, they can respond quickly to changing conditions and manage resources more effectively.

Intelory is now planning to expand the system to new regions. Future updates, including the WisGate Connect upgrade, will bring even more control and flexibility to their network. By combining sustainability, technology and local expertise, Intelory is building a scalable model for agricultural success—one that could shape the future of farming not just in North Macedonia, but across Europe.
